School ventilation

- isn't it just comfort ventilation?

Many associate school ventilation with comfort ventilation and possibly a little process ventilation. This is both right and wrong.

In contrast to an office building, a school contains many more different types of room, often with large load variations.

Rooms that typically require comfort ventilation

Rooms that may require either comfort or process ventilation

Rooms that require both comfort and process ventilation
  • Classrooms
  • Lounge/corridors
  • Office
  • Gym hall and showers
  • Music hall
  • Library
  • Server room
  • Auditorium
  • Kitchen
  • Toilets
  • Chemistry
  • Wood and metal workshop
  • Needlework room
  • Copy and print room
These types of rooms do not generate fumes or hazardous gases. Comfort ventilation can readily be use with these types of rooms.

If using a rotary heat exchanger, ensure that the purge functions correctly prevent fumes from escaping into other rooms.

Alternatively, simple extraction can be used for toilets and cooker hoods.
For these types of rooms the EU ATEX directive specifies how process ventilation must be installed and how it must function.

Whether a centralised, decentralised, comfort or process ventilation solution is chosen will depend on factors such as the school layout, annual usage and overall costs amongst others. By using our calculation tools such as Exselect and the CO2 calculator, which both can be found at our calculation programs page, you can make your own calculations concerning the indoor climate and ventilation needs in different premises at your school, thus giving you an indication of air quality and learning ability.

EXHAUSTO documentation and guidance is designed to be used in every phase of a project - from planning and tendering through to installation, operation and servicing. As well as this project planning guide, more technical information is available in our individual product brochures or by contacting EXHAUSTO directly.
